Role overview
This role is centered on designing scoring and incentive systems that remain credible when users actively look for ways to manipulate them. The work combines mechanism design, adversarial analysis, software implementation, and simulation. Because scoring rules appear in specifications, generated or executable engines, and user-facing explanations, the role also requires maintaining behavioral and explanatory consistency across every representation.
Responsibilities
- Identify ways participants could game scoring or incentive systems and design defenses against those strategies. - Express mechanism-design decisions in code rather than relying only on policy or documentation. - Increase the real cost of manipulation, instead of merely reducing the benefit available to an attacker. - Keep scoring rules aligned across the formal specification, the engines generated from it, and the explanatory copy shown in the interface. - Maintain parity tests that detect divergence between implementations and their stated behavior. - Use before-and-after simulations to evaluate whether a proposed change improves resistance to gaming.
Requirements
- Ability to reason about adversarial incentives and anticipate how people will attempt to exploit a scoring system. - Experience translating rules or mechanisms into reliable software behavior. - Careful attention to consistency between specifications, generated engines, tests, and user-facing explanations. - Ability to use simulations to support mechanism changes with evidence rather than intuition. - Strong judgment about whether a defense raises the actual cost of manipulation.
