Remote job
Principal Engineer - Core Cloud Platform
Job details
About this role
Role overview Set the technical direction for a cloud platform that supports a large engineering organization and is expanding toward hundreds of Kubernetes clusters. This principal-level role combines architecture, software development, and hands-on operations, with particular ownership of infrastructure configuration, storage, and the systems used to provision and manage platform environments.
Responsibilities - Define the roadmap for cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, and storage, and lead delivery across engineering teams. - Own cloud configuration and Helm charts, keeping infrastructure lifecycles distinct from application releases. - Build a registry and automated workflows that reduce the time needed to provision new platform environments. - Create a consistent checkpoint mechanism for coordinating changes across environments. - Operate and evolve cloud, cluster, and data storage systems; make upgrades, patching, and lifecycle management routine at fleet scale. - Improve security, reliability, performance, and cost; establish reusable standards and self-service workflows, including AI-powered tools that simplify operations.
Requirements - Extensive experience with Kubernetes, containers, and AWS, including operating production SaaS systems at scale. - Experience managing Kubernetes across a large fleet, ideally hundreds of clusters. - Strong knowledge of data storage systems, including SQL databases, MongoDB, ClickHouse, and Elasticsearch. - Strong troubleshooting skills across Kubernetes, databases, messaging systems, networking, service meshes, and gateways. - Experience managing infrastructure configuration separately from application code, and with cell-based, multi-tenant, or multi-region designs. - Proficiency in Python and Go, plus a record of leading technical roadmaps and improving CI/CD practices.
Nice to have - Experience with Vespa, end-to-end automated provisioning, cluster fleet lifecycle tools, or production secret-management systems such as Vault. - Interest in applying AI tools to infrastructure work and enabling developer-led operations.
