Remote job
Senior Staff Software Engineer, Calibration
Job details
About this role
Role overview A humanoid robotics organization is scaling production of commercially deployed bipedal robots that operate alongside people in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and distribution centers. The Senior Staff Software Engineer for Calibration owns the end-to-end calibration capability, designing and building the systems that ensure every unit leaves the line with accurate, repeatable sensor and kinematic alignment. This is a player-coach position combining deep technical execution with leadership of other engineers and stewardship of long-term technical direction.
Responsibilities - Design, implement, and ship full calibration systems, including algorithms, fixtures, on-fixture software, data pipelines, validation, and operator workflow. - Own calibration across perception sensors (RGB cameras, LiDAR, thermal imagers, and other modalities) as well as whole-body and joint kinematic calibration, including coupled sensor extrinsics. - Build the data and metrics layer for calibration at scale, covering per-unit records, accuracy and drift tracking, traceability, and fleet-level monitoring. - Deliver operator-facing calibration fixture software on Linux and define requirements for downstream manufacturing processes such as cycle time and repeatability. - Develop in-field self-check and recalibration capabilities that keep systems within spec throughout service life. - Coordinate with sensor vendors and contract manufacturers on process deployment, documentation, training, and acceptance criteria, while mentoring and growing the calibration engineering team.
Requirements - 10+ years of practical experience calibrating complex robotic or sensor-rich systems in real production environments. - Track record of delivering calibration systems end to end, including algorithms, fixtures, on-fixture software, validation, and operator workflow. - Deep expertise across multiple sensor modalities (RGB cameras, LiDAR, thermal imagers, IMUs, encoders) and working command of kinematic calibration and sensor-to-kinematics coupling. - Strong programming skills in C++ and Python, with the ability to operate hands-on in lab and production settings. - Demonstrated player-coach orientation: able to execute technical work directly while identifying and developing talent. - Effective collaborator across hardware, controls, perception, sensor vendors, and contract manufacturing stakeholders.
Nice to have - Prior ownership of calibration end to end at an autonomous vehicle company, a mobile robotics organization (humanoid, quadruped, or other dynamically stable platform), or another hardware group deploying sensor-rich systems at scale.
Benefits and work setup - Anticipated base salary range of $218,000–$340,000 USD, with eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus. - 401(k) plan with a 6% company match and equity through company stock options. - 100% company-paid medical, dental, vision, and short- and long-term disability insurance for employees, plus an Employee Assistance Program. - Flexible, unlimited paid time off for exempt staff and 12 company holidays, including a winter shutdown. - Paid parental leave, professional development and tuition reimbursement, and relocation assistance for eligible roles. - On-site perks such as catered lunches several times a week at major engineering locations, with a culture that supports flexible work arrangements.
