About this role
Role overview A commercial humanoid robotics company is hiring a Senior Safety Software Engineer to help embed functional safety into a perception system that allows bipedal robots to operate near people. The role sits at the intersection of cutting-edge machine learning and traditional functional safety engineering, shaping software architecture for safety-critical perception. It is a senior individual-contributor position with mentorship responsibilities and cross-functional reach into hardware, ML, and core software teams.
Responsibilities - Design and implement highly reliable software for safety-critical systems that combine classic functional safety techniques with newer deep learning safety methods. - Collaborate with machine learning, hardware, and core software teams to keep data pipelines, models, and middleware operating inside defined safety envelopes. - Develop and optimize software that runs on both Linux and real-time operating systems. - Build rigorous testing frameworks and validation strategies that prove reliability and safety under edge-case scenarios. - Mentor junior engineers on safety-critical coding standards and best practices.
Requirements - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer or Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field. - Five or more years of professional software engineering experience focused on systems-level or embedded development in C++, C, or Rust. - Strong grasp of software architecture for embedded platforms and a clear drive for reliability. - Excellent problem-solving skills with a quality-first mindset.
Nice to have - Experience bringing up alpha hardware and booting an operating system. - Familiarity with camera and LiDAR perception pipelines. - A history of writing formally certified safety-critical code. - Applied knowledge of standards such as ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or ISO 13849. - Hands-on work with ROS 2, machine learning pipelines, Linux kernel configuration, or RTOS development on platforms like QNX integrated into modern CI/CD.
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote within the U.S., with hybrid flexibility near offices in Salem, OR, Pittsburgh, PA, or Fremont, CA. - Anticipated base salary range of $175,000 to $274,000 USD, plus eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus. - Benefits include 401(k) with company match, equity, fully company-paid medical/dental/vision and disability coverage, EAP, parental leave, tuition reimbursement, and unlimited PTO for exempt staff with twelve paid holidays.
