Job details
About this role
Role overview A consumer lending platform is hiring a Staff Backend Engineer to lead its Identity Decisioning team for markets outside North America. The work centers on KYC, user lifecycle management, and real-time identity verification, with direct influence on checkout conversion, fraud exposure, revenue, and regulatory compliance. It is a hands-on technical leadership role that pairs year-scale strategy setting with day-to-day engineering excellence.
Responsibilities - Define and drive the team's technical strategy across a roughly year-long horizon, aligning it with major business-impacting initiatives. - Partner with product, design, and analytics throughout the development lifecycle to surface trade-offs, manage risk, and keep systems sustainable. - Serve as a force multiplier by championing technical designs and operational practices that lift the whole team. - Own reliability and availability: monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, testing, and alerting that support on-call and keep-the-lights-on work. - Set the bar for code review and design quality, and advocate for those standards externally through writing and tech talks. - Mentor and develop engineers through feedback, coaching, and leading by example.
Requirements - 8+ years of experience designing, building, and launching backend systems at scale, ideally in Python or Kotlin. - A strong track record building highly available distributed systems using tools such as AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes. - Demonstrated ability to deliver major features or deprecate existing functionality via a clear technical and execution plan, producing high-quality code others can use. - Comfort moving between low-level language idioms and large-system architecture to reason through ambiguity. - Evidence of growing impact over time through gathering and acting on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers. - Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaborating across a globally distributed engineering organization. - Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Nice to have - Prior work on identity, KYC, fraud, or payments systems. - Experience adapting a platform to new regulatory environments or international markets.
Benefits and work setup - Remote-first within Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan), with occasional in-person onboarding. - 100% employer-covered medical, dental, and vision premiums for employees and dependents. - Monthly stipends for technology, wellness, and personal spending. - Flexible time off plus a generous holiday calendar. - Employee stock purchase plan offering discounted shares. - Base pay range of CAD $181,000–$241,000, with equity eligibility and a transparent pay structure based on location, experience, and skills.
