Job details
About this role
Role overview Build the people practices and staffing systems that help engineers succeed across multiple product engagements. You’ll partner with technical and delivery leads, taking direct responsibility for hiring, coaching, team growth, and capacity while staying familiar with the technical work. This is a hands-on management role in a small company, including support for engineers adapting their work to AI agents.
Responsibilities - Hold regular one-to-ones that lead to clear, useful follow-up actions. - Own engineering hiring, including role expectations, interview structure, candidate feedback, and the candidate experience. - Staff teams to balance client needs with engineers’ development goals. - Identify overload, stalled work, and retention concerns early. - Create clear levels, expectations, and progression paths for engineers. - Work with delivery leads to keep commitments aligned with team capacity. - Join architecture reviews, pair on difficult problems, and stay informed about risks across codebases.
Requirements - At least three years managing engineers, including hiring and performance conversations, with evidence of learning from difficult decisions. - Continued engagement with code and engineering work, including reviewing pull requests. - Experience running structured interviews and explaining hiring decisions clearly. - Ability to use delivery measures such as cycle time, review delays, and incident load to improve systems rather than rank individuals. - Experience handling performance, compensation, and growth discussions fairly. - Strong organization and the ability to earn trust across teams.
Nice to have - Experience in an agency, consultancy, or studio with multiple engagements underway. - Experience scaling a team while maintaining a healthy culture, or managing distributed teams across MENA time zones.
Benefits and work setup - Remote work across the MENA region, with schedules organized around team overlap. - Close involvement in small teams and direct contact with client work. - Budget for equipment and software, plus a learning budget with time to use it. - Paid time off and no timesheets.
